Automatic door activation methods decide how your entrance knows someone wants to come through. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a new door annoys people daily. This guide covers the options used on commercial entrances in South Africa.

- Motion sensors — the default for public entrances. The door opens as someone approaches. Fast, hands-free and suited to high traffic.
- Presence and safety sensors — these do not open the door so much as keep it from closing on someone standing in the opening. Every powered entrance needs them.
- Push buttons and wave switches — the door opens only when someone asks it to, which suits controlled areas, wards and back-of-house doors.
- Remote controls — a handheld remote for staff, useful where an entrance is opened and closed on a schedule.
- Access control — card readers, keypads and intercoms, so the door only opens for people who are entitled to enter.

The choice comes down to who should be able to open the door, and how often:
- Public retail entrance — motion activation, because every customer should be able to walk in.
- Healthcare corridor — wave switch or push button, so the door only cycles when it is actually needed.
- Staff-only entrance — access control, so the door is a security boundary rather than an open invitation.
- Mixed public and secure areas — motion during trading hours, access control outside them.
Automatic door activation methods: activation is not the same as safety
This distinction matters and is regularly missed. An activation sensor decides when the door opens. A safety sensor decides when it must not close. Getting the automatic door activation methods right first time
The commonest mistake is specifying motion activation everywhere because it is the default. A stockroom door on motion activation cycles every time someone walks past it, wearing the belt and rollers for no reason and driving up the service interval. Matching the activation method to the actual door duty is free at specification stage and expensive to change afterwards.
Where a door serves two purposes — public during trading hours, secure outside them — say so up front. Combining automatic door activation methods on one entrance is straightforward when it is designed in, and awkward when it is retrofitted.
