Safety glass is manufactured so that, if it fails, it does so in a much safer way — either by holding together or by breaking into small blunt pieces. How the panes are made, handled and installed

Understanding how a pane is manufactured explains why some can be cut on site and others cannot. Toughened units are heated to roughly 620 °C and then cooled rapidly, which locks the outer surfaces into compression. That compression is what gives the pane its strength, and it is also why the unit must be cut, drilled and edge-worked before it goes through the furnace. Once tempered, any attempt to cut it releases the stress and the whole pane breaks down into fragments. Laminated units behave differently: two or more plies are bonded to an interlayer under heat and pressure, so the assembly can be trimmed, although edge quality still matters a great deal.

Why edgework and handling matter more than people expect

Most breakages we see are not caused by impact at all. They start at a chipped or nipped edge that was knocked during transport or while the unit was being manoeuvred into an opening. A clean arrissed edge distributes load evenly; a damaged one concentrates it, and the pane can fail hours or even weeks later with no obvious cause. Units should be carried on edge rather than flat, stored upright against a padded rack, and never rested directly on concrete.

Setting blocks, clearance and thermal movement

A pane must never bear directly on the frame. Setting blocks at the quarter points carry the weight, and an edge clearance around the perimeter lets the unit move as it warms and cools without loading the corners.
