Aluminium Window Installers: How to Choose One Near You

Coetz™ supplies made-to-size aluminium windows and doors – we do not install them. That keeps our prices low, but it means you need a good installer. This page helps you find aluminium window installers near you, choose the right one and agree the job properly, so your new windows and doors go in square, sealed and safe.

We are building our list of approved aluminium window installers. Send us your suburb on WhatsApp and we will suggest an installer near you.

Why Coetz™ is supply only

We make aluminium windows and doors to standard sizes and sell them online at catalogue prices, with delivery across South Africa or free collection in Laser Park. We do not run installation teams for aluminium windows and doors, so you never pay for travel time, site visits or installation overheads built into the price. You choose your own installer and pay them directly.

Automatic doors and shopfronts are the exception: those are supplied and installed by our parent company, MC Automations, under a separate quotation.

What aluminium window installers do

Aluminium window installers – who does what on your project

A good aluminium window installer does more than put a frame in a hole. On a typical job, aluminium window installers will:

  • check that the opening is square, level and the right size before the windows arrive
  • remove old steel, timber or aluminium frames without damaging the surrounding brickwork (on replacement jobs)
  • set each frame plumb and level, with the right fixing gap around it, and fix it securely to the structure
  • seal the frame to the wall with a suitable sealant
  • check that every sash opens, closes and locks properly, and adjust hinges, stays and rollers
  • clean up, remove packaging and rubble, and point out how to look after the windows

Waterproofing of the opening itself – damp-proof course, cills, flashings – is the builder’s job and must be done before installation. Frame sealing alone does not waterproof an opening, so agree who does what before work starts.

How to choose aluminium window installers

Aluminium window installers – 5 things to check before you hire

Not every builder fits aluminium well. When you compare aluminium window installers, look for:

  1. Aluminium experience. Ask how long they have fitted aluminium windows and doors, and how many jobs like yours they have done.
  2. Recent work you can see. Photos are good; a phone call with a past customer is better.
  3. A written, itemised quote. Fixing, sealing, removal of old frames, making good plaster and disposal should all be listed.
  4. Knowledge of safety glazing. Your windows come with 6.38 mm laminated safety glass, but the installer should know where the National Building Regulations require safety glass.
  5. A workmanship guarantee in writing. Our product warranty covers manufacturing defects; your installer’s guarantee covers the fitting.
  6. Insurance. Public liability cover protects you if something goes wrong on site.
  7. A realistic start date and timeline. A clear plan beats a promise of “next week”.

Questions to ask before you hire an installer

Before you choose between aluminium window installers, ask each one the same questions so you can compare like with like:

  • Will you measure the openings, or must I give you the sizes?
  • What is included in your price, and what is extra?
  • Who removes the old frames and the rubble?
  • How do you fix the frames, and which sealant do you use?
  • Who is responsible for waterproofing and cills?
  • Can you issue a glazing certificate if the municipality or my bond asks for one?
  • How long will the job take, and how many people will be on site?
  • What guarantee do you give on your workmanship, and for how long?

What to agree in writing

Aluminium window installers – what to agree in writing

A short written agreement prevents most disputes. Make sure it covers:

  • the exact scope of work, opening by opening
  • the total price, what it includes and the payment schedule – never pay the full amount up front
  • who supplies sealant, fixings and cills
  • who waterproofs the openings and when
  • making good plaster and paint around the frames
  • removal of old frames, packaging and rubble
  • the start date, the expected finish date and access to the site
  • the workmanship guarantee

Before your installer arrives

Most installation problems start before the installer arrives. Use this checklist:

  • Measure carefully. Follow our guides on how to measure for aluminium windows and how to measure aluminium doors, or ask your installer to measure and confirm the sizes with you.
  • Order the right sizes. Each frame is made 10 mm smaller than the opening you order, to leave a fitting gap. Building to a standard aluminium window size saves money.
  • Check the opening direction. Confirm the opening direction of every sash and door before ordering.
  • Plan delivery or collection. See our delivery page for zones, rates and timeframes, and tell us about difficult access.
  • Store the units safely. Keep glazed units upright, dry and out of the weather until the installer is ready.
  • Inspect on arrival. Check every unit on delivery and report damage within 48 hours, before installation – see our returns and refunds policy.

New builds and replacement windows

On a new build, the builder usually sets out the openings, and the aluminium window installer fits the frames once the walls, lintels and cills are ready. Building the openings to standard sizes from the start keeps the cost down.

Replacing old steel or timber windows takes more care: the old frame has to come out cleanly, and the opening often needs repair before the new frame goes in. Our guide on replacing steel windows with aluminium explains the process step by step.

Safety glazing and compliance

The National Building Regulations (SANS 10400 Part N) set out where safety glass is required, for example in doors, low-level glazing and areas next to doors. Every Coetz™ window and door is glazed with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard.

Some municipalities, banks and insurers ask for a glazing certificate at the end of a building project. A glazing certificate is usually issued by a competent person who checked the installation, so ask your installer early whether they can issue one. Our guides explain glazing certificates, when a glazing certificate is required and who counts as a competent person.

Warranty and installation

Our warranty covers manufacturing defects in the frames, glass, finish and hardware, from the date of delivery. It does not cover installation errors or damage during installation, so the quality of your aluminium window installer matters. Keep your invoice and the installer’s written guarantee together – if a problem appears later, these two documents show whether it is a product defect or a fitting issue.

Installation day, step by step

Aluminium window installers – installation day step by step

Every installer works a little differently, but a well-run installation day usually follows the same order:

  1. Unpack and check. The installer unpacks each unit, checks it against the order and the opening, and keeps the glass protected.
  2. Prepare the opening. Old frames come out, loose plaster is removed and the opening is cleaned. Any damaged brickwork is repaired before the new frame goes in.
  3. Set the frame. The frame is placed in the opening on packers, then set plumb, level and square, with an even fitting gap all round.
  4. Fix the frame. The frame is fixed to the structure with suitable fixings at the right spacing, without twisting or bowing the profile.
  5. Seal. The gap between frame and wall is sealed inside and outside with a suitable sealant, over the builder’s waterproofing.
  6. Adjust the hardware. Every sash, door leaf, stay, handle, lock and roller is checked and adjusted so it opens, closes and locks smoothly.
  7. Clean and hand over. Protective film and labels come off, the frames and glass are cleaned, and the installer shows you how everything works.

Good aluminium window installers will walk through each opening with you at the end of the day and fix small issues on the spot.

Sliding and folding doors need extra care

Sliding doors, stacking doors and bi-fold doors are heavier and less forgiving than windows. The track must be dead level and fully supported along its length, or the panels will run unevenly and wear the rollers. Wide openings need a proper lintel above, built by the builder, because the frame is not designed to carry the wall. Large panels also need two or more people to handle and install safely.

When you compare aluminium window installers for a patio, kitchen or lounge door, ask specifically about their experience with sliding and folding doors, and how they make sure the track stays level once the floor finishes go down. Our guides to stacking doors and aluminium sliding door rollers explain what to look for.

Coastal and exposed sites

On the coast, salt in the air settles on aluminium and fixings. Ask your installer to use corrosion-resistant fixings and to seal the frames carefully, and wash the frames and glass regularly with fresh water and mild soap once they are in. Regular cleaning is also a condition of our powder-coating warranty in coastal areas, as explained on our warranty page.

Common installation mistakes to avoid

Most problems with new aluminium windows and doors come from a handful of avoidable mistakes:

  • Ordering before the opening is final. Measure after plastering, or agree the finished opening size with your builder first.
  • Forcing a frame into a tight opening. A frame squeezed into an opening that is too small can bow and stop sashes closing properly.
  • Skipping waterproofing. Sealant on its own does not stop water coming in under the cill or around the frame.
  • Fixing through the frame in the wrong place. Fixings must not distort the profile or block drainage slots.
  • Installing damaged units. Report delivery damage within 48 hours and before installation, or the claim may be declined.
  • Paying everything up front. Agree a payment schedule tied to the work actually done.

Experienced aluminium window installers avoid these mistakes as a matter of routine, which is why it pays to choose carefully.

A short snag list for after installation

Before the installer leaves, check every unit yourself:

  • Every sash and door opens, closes and locks without forcing.
  • Sliding panels run smoothly along the full length of the track.
  • There are no gaps in the sealant around the frame, inside or outside.
  • The drainage holes at the bottom of the frame are clear.
  • Glass and frames are clean, with no scratches or chips.
  • The protective film has been removed, unless it is staying on during further building work.

Note anything that needs attention and agree with the installer when it will be fixed. Problems caused by fitting are the installer’s responsibility; manufacturing defects are covered by our warranty.

Services

Frequently asked questions

Does Coetz install aluminium windows?

No. Coetz™ aluminium windows and doors are supply only. You arrange your own installer, and this page helps you find and choose one. Automatic doors and shopfronts are installed by MC Automations under a separate quotation.

Can you recommend aluminium window installers near me?

Yes. Approved installers are listed on this page. If there is no installer listed for your area yet, WhatsApp us on 076 613 4418 with your suburb and we will suggest one.

Are the installers on this page Coetz employees?

No. Listed installers are independent businesses. We check their details before listing them, but your agreement and the workmanship guarantee are between you and the installer.

Who measures the openings?

You or your installer measure each opening. Our measuring guides show how. Many aluminium window installers will measure for you and confirm the sizes before you order.

Does the warranty still apply if someone else installs the windows?

Yes. Our warranty covers manufacturing defects whoever installs the windows. It does not cover damage or faults caused by the installation itself.

How much does installation cost?

Installation prices vary by area, access, the number of openings and whether old frames must be removed. Ask two or three aluminium window installers for written, itemised quotes and compare them line by line.
