Aluminium Pivot Door Handles

aluminium pivot door handles: T-mitre straight, D-mitre and D-crank styles

Aluminium pivot door handles do more than open the door: on a wide pivot entrance, a long pull handle is part of the look, and it is the one part of the door everyone touches. Coetz™ pivot and swing doors take stainless steel pull handles in several styles. This guide explains the handle options for aluminium pivot doors, how to choose a size, the lock that comes with the door, and how to look after the hardware.

Why pivot doors use pull handles

A pivot door has no lever handle and latch like a hinged door. It is pushed or pulled open on its pivot, so a fixed pull handle is the natural choice. On a tall leaf, a long vertical handle gives everyone, from children to tall adults, something to hold at a comfortable height.

The handle styles

Three styles of aluminium pivot door handles are available.

Straight (T-mitre) pull handles

A straight bar standing off the door on two mitred legs. It comes in several lengths, from a short handle for a 2 100 mm door to a long bar that runs much of the door’s height. The longest option is made for pivot and swing doors only.

D-mitre handles

A compact D-shaped handle with mitred corners, for a neat, modern look on a smaller leaf.

D-crank handles

A D-shaped handle with cranked ends, a sturdy everyday option for a busy door.

All three are stainless steel, so they do not rust and keep their finish with a wipe-down.

Choosing aluminium pivot door handles

Use these points to choose aluminium pivot door handles:

  1. Match the door height. A 2 400 mm leaf looks better with a longer bar than a 2 100 mm leaf.
  2. Think about who uses it. A long bar suits children and wheelchair users as well as adults.
  3. Match the style. Straight bars suit modern entrances; D handles suit smaller, simpler doors.
  4. Consider grip. Try the handle shape at the height people will use it.
  5. Order with the door, so the fixing holes are made in the right place.

Locks

Pivot doors come with a roller lock, and swing doors with a deadlock. The locking cylinder, the part the key turns, is chosen separately: full, half or thumb-turn, and keyed alike if several doors should share a key. See aluminium door locks.

Handle position

On a pivot door, the handle sits on the side of the leaf furthest from the pivot, where it gives the most leverage. A long vertical bar lets a person push or pull at whatever height is comfortable, which is why it suits an entrance used by children, older people and wheelchair users alike. Aluminium pivot door handles are fixed through the frame, never through the glass.

Handles for swing doors

Double-action and single-action swing doors take the same stainless steel pull handles as pivot doors. A double-action door usually has a handle or push plate on both faces, because people push it from either side. See aluminium swing doors.

Pricing

Aluminium pivot door handles are an optional extra on pivot and swing doors, priced by style and length. Ask for a price when you order your door. The doors themselves start at R10 494 excluding VAT for a 1 200 × 2 100 mm Large Pane pivot door; see aluminium pivot door designs.

Looking after pivot door handles

Stainless steel aluminium pivot door handles need very little care:

  • Wipe the handle with a soft cloth and mild soap and water.
  • Avoid abrasive pads and chlorine cleaners, which can mark stainless steel, especially at the coast.
  • Check the fixings once a year and tighten them if the handle moves.
  • Clean the pivot area at the floor so grit does not stiffen the door.
