Aluminium swing doors are the workhorses of shops, offices, clinics and restaurants: a glazed aluminium leaf that swings open with a push, in one direction or both. Coetz™ makes two kinds of aluminium swing doors: double action, which swings both ways, and single action, which swings one way, in or out. This guide explains the difference, where each works best, sizes and prices, and how they compare with pivot and hinged doors.

Double action or single action?
Double action
A double-action door swings both ways, so people can push through from either side without pulling. It suits a busy opening with two-way traffic, such as a shop, a canteen or a corridor, where nobody should have to stop and pull a handle. Because it swings both ways, no opening direction is selected when you order.
Single action
A single-action door swings one way only. You choose open in or open out when you order, at the same price either way. It suits an entrance where traffic flows mainly one way, or where the door must stop against a frame for weather and security.
| Double action | Single action | |
|---|---|---|
| Swings | Both ways | One way, in or out |
| Best for | Two-way traffic | Entrances, one-way flow |
| Widths | 1 200, 1 500 mm | 1 200 mm |
| Heights | 2 100, 2 400 mm | 2 100, 2 400 mm |

Designs and glass
Both kinds of aluminium swing doors come in the Classic and Large Pane designs, glazed with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass, which holds together if it is struck. Doors in public areas must meet SANS 10400-N, published by the South African Bureau of Standards.
Prices
Prices are for White, excluding VAT, at the time of writing (October 2026).

Where aluminium swing doors work best
Aluminium swing doors suit commercial spaces with steady foot traffic:
- Retail and showrooms, where customers come and go all day.
- Restaurants and canteens, between front and back of house.
- Offices and receptions, on internal corridors.
- Clinics and practices, where staff move between rooms.
For a hands-free entrance, a swing door can be automated with the MCW-100 operator; see low energy automatic swing doors.
Swing, pivot or hinged?
- Swing doors swing open with a push, one way or both.
- Pivot doors turn on a pivot at the head and floor, for a wide, dramatic entrance. See aluminium pivot door designs.
- Hinged doors hang on side hinges and suit homes. See aluminium hinged doors.

Locks and handles
Swing doors come with a deadlock; the locking cylinder is chosen separately. Stainless steel pull handles are available on request. See aluminium door locks and aluminium pivot door handles.
Colours
Aluminium swing doors come in all five finishes: White, Bronze and Charcoal at the same price, Black about 10% more and Natural Anodised about 20% more.
Planning the opening
A double-action door needs clear space on both sides, because it swings both ways; keep displays and queues out of its arc. Pivot and swing doors have no cill and a standard 7 mm clearance under the leaf, so they are not weatherproof: fit them where a roof or covered entrance keeps the rain off. A single-action door needs space only on the side it opens to. On a busy opening, a vision panel at eye height lets people see who is coming, which is why all aluminium swing doors in the range are fully glazed.
