Aluminium Bathroom Windows: Types, Heights, Privacy and Prices

19 October 2026·5 min read·By Marcel Coetzee

Aluminium bathroom windows have two jobs that pull in opposite directions: let steam out and light in, while keeping the room private. The answer is mostly about position and opening type, not special glass. This guide covers the best window types for a bathroom, typical bathroom window heights and sizes, how to get privacy with clear glass, and real prices for aluminium bathroom windows in South Africa.

Every price below is a real Coetz™ shop price, excluding VAT, in White with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass. Coetz™ makes aluminium windows to order and supplies them nationwide; your builder or installer fits them.

Why aluminium suits a bathroom

A bathroom is the dampest room in the house. Timber frames swell and rot there, and steel frames rust. Aluminium bathroom windows do neither: the powder-coated or anodised frame is unaffected by steam and wipes clean with mild soapy water. Keep the drainage holes at the bottom of the frame clear and the seals clean, and the window will last – see how to clean aluminium windows.

The best types of aluminium bathroom windows

Top hung windows

A top hung window is hinged at the top and opens outwards from the bottom. It is the classic choice for aluminium bathroom windows: the open sash is angled downwards, so it lets steam out while blocking a direct view in and keeping light rain out. See top hung aluminium windows.

Small fixed and top hung combinations

For wider aluminium bathroom windows, combine a fixed pane with a small top hung opening section. You get plenty of light and a vent you can leave open after a shower.

Sliding and vertical sliding windows

If the window opens onto a narrow walkway, a sliding window or a vertical sliding window vents the room without anything projecting outside.

Bathroom window height and privacy

For aluminium bathroom windows, the simplest privacy is height. A sill set above eye level lets light and air in while nobody outside can see in.

  • High-level windows: a sill about 1 500–1 800 mm above the floor clears most sightlines from outside and from the bath or shower.
  • Above a bath or basin: a standard sill above the bath or vanity is fine if you add privacy film or a blind.
  • Toilet windows: a small high-level top hung window, such as 450 × 450 mm or 600 × 600 mm, gives ventilation without overlooking.

Confirm the sill height with your builder; your architect shows the window size and the room’s ventilation (a window or an extractor fan) on the plans.

Privacy with clear glass

All Coetz™ aluminium bathroom windows are glazed with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass – we do not supply frosted or obscure glass. If the window is at eye level, there are three easy ways to get privacy:

  1. Privacy film. A frosted or one-way film applied to the inside of the glass after installation. It is inexpensive and can be removed later.
  2. Blinds or shutters. Moisture-resistant blinds give privacy only when you need it.
  3. Position. Set the window higher, or angle it so it does not face a neighbour, path or street.

Laminated glass has a practical benefit in a bathroom too: if it is ever broken, the interlayer holds the pieces together instead of letting them fall onto a wet floor. Safety glazing rules are set out in SANS 10400-N, published by the South African Bureau of Standards – see where safety glass is required.

Ventilation and condensation

Aluminium bathroom windows only clear steam when they are open. Steam that cannot escape condenses on cold surfaces – glass, frames and tiles. Open the window during and after a shower, or run an extractor fan, and wipe the sill if water collects. If you see water on the inside of the glass on cold mornings, read aluminium window condensation; if water is coming in from outside, see aluminium windows leaking.

Before you order aluminium bathroom windows

  1. Decide the sill height for privacy, with your builder.
  2. Choose a top hung window, or a fixed pane with a top hung vent for wide openings.
  3. Measure the opening; units are made 10 mm smaller than the catalogue size for fitting.
  4. Plan privacy film or blinds if the window is at eye level.
  5. Arrange your installer – see how to install aluminium windows.

Aluminium bathroom windows: frequently asked questions

What is the best window for a bathroom?

A top hung window is the most popular choice for aluminium bathroom windows: the sash opens outwards and downwards, so it vents steam while blocking a direct view in and keeping light rain out.

How high should a bathroom window be?

For privacy, set the sill above eye level – about 1 500–1 800 mm above the floor. Lower windows work with privacy film or a blind.

What size is a bathroom window?

Popular sizes are 600 × 600 mm and 600 × 900 mm for toilets and small bathrooms, and 900 × 900 mm to 1 200 × 900 mm for larger bathrooms.

Can I get frosted glass in an aluminium bathroom window?

No. Coetz™ supplies every window with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass. For privacy, apply a frosted privacy film after installation, fit a blind, or set the window higher.

How much does a bathroom window cost?

At Coetz™, a 600 × 600 mm top hung bathroom window costs R1 481 excluding VAT in White, and a 450 × 450 mm top hung window R1 191.

Do aluminium windows rust in a bathroom?

No. Aluminium does not rust, and the powder-coated or anodised finish is unaffected by steam. Keep the drainage holes and seals clean.
