Aluminium stable doors Springs: air without an open door
Springs has many older homes and smallholdings on the far East Rand, where an aluminium stable door replaces an old timber back door for good.
A stable door is split across the middle into two leaves that open separately. Open the top leaf and the room gets air and light while the bottom leaf stays closed, keeping toddlers in, pets out and the yard dust off the floor. Open both and it works like an ordinary door. It is the classic choice for kitchens, sculleries, laundries, outbuildings and smallholdings.
Aluminium stable doors Springs: four infills
- Glass: glazed top and bottom, for the most light, from R11 652.
- Half glass / half cladding: glass in the top leaf and solid aluminium in the bottom, the most popular kitchen door, from R13 919.
- Cladding: solid aluminium top and bottom, for privacy and security on outbuildings and store rooms, from R15 848.
- Y-Louvre inserts: aluminium louvre blades for airflow even when closed, from R16 073. Louvres are not weatherproof, so use them only under cover.

Aluminium stable doors Springs: open in or open out?
Every stable door is built to open in or open out, and you choose the direction when you order; it is built into the door, so it cannot be changed later. Both directions cost the same. An outward-opening door leaves more room inside the kitchen and closes against its seals when the wind pushes on it; an inward-opening door suits a doorway that opens onto steps, a narrow path or a security gate. Every product drawing is shown from inside, so you can see the swing before you order.

Where stable doors work best
- Kitchen to garden or yard: the top leaf stays open while you cook, and the bottom keeps children and dogs where they belong.
- Scullery and laundry: air out steam and heat without leaving the door wide open.
- Smallholdings and plots: outbuildings, tack rooms and workshops, where a cladding infill adds privacy.
- Covered braai areas: a Y-Louvre stable door gives airflow under cover.
- Replacing an old timber stable door: the same look with none of the warping or painting.
Aluminium stable doors Springs or a hinged door?
A hinged door opens as one leaf and comes in more widths and styles, including double doors, from R7 566. A stable door opens in two halves for airflow and comes 900 mm wide. Choose a stable door where you want the top open and the bottom closed; choose a hinged door for a front entrance, a wider opening or a double door. See aluminium hinged doors Springs.
Glass and colours
Glazed leaves have 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard, which holds together if broken. Doors are one of the places where South African building rules require safety glass, as set out in SANS 10400-N, published by the SABS. Frames come in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised, all at the same price.

Privacy and security
Choose the infill for the room behind the door. A glass stable door brings the most light into a kitchen that faces a private garden. A half glass, half cladding door keeps the lower half solid, which hides the kitchen floor and the dog bowls from the yard and stands up better to knocks. A cladding door gives full privacy for store rooms, workshops and outbuildings. Laminated glass cracks but holds together, so getting through a glazed leaf takes time and makes noise.
Looking after stable doors
Wipe the frames with mild soapy water, never an abrasive cleaner, which scratches the powder coat. Lubricate the hinges and locks with a dry silicone spray once or twice a year, and check the seals before winter. If a leaf starts to catch, have your installer check that the frame is square and the hinges are tight.
Measuring
Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and at both sides, and use the smallest size. Every stable door is 900 mm wide; the actual frame is 10 mm smaller than the catalogue size each way, so a 900 × 2 100 mm door has an 890 × 2 090 mm frame, which leaves the installer room to pack and seal it.
