For South African installations, the system should be selected according to the actual operating environment rather than door size alone. Pedestrian traffic, door weight, opening frequency, environmental exposure, power availability (including load-shedding) and required security/access control should all be considered. For commercial environments, selecting an appropriately rated operator matters because high-traffic entrances place substantially greater demands on the operator.

Planning the opening before you order
An automatic entrance is decided by the opening long before it is decided by the operator. The single most common reason a project stalls is that the wall has no room for the leaf to slide into, and that is far cheaper to discover on a drawing than on site.
- Side room. A sliding leaf has to go somewhere when it opens. A single-sliding entrance needs clear wall alongside the opening roughly equal to the leaf width; a bi-parting entrance needs that space on both sides. Windows, columns, downpipes and signage all compete for it.
- Header space. The operator sits in a housing above the opening. Confirm what is directly above the lintel — a bulkhead, ducting or a suspended ceiling can all affect how the header is accommodated.
- Power. A dedicated supply is needed at the header. Getting the electrician to leave a point during first fix is straightforward; chasing a wall afterwards is not.
- Floor condition. The track and floor guide rely on a level, sound floor across the full opening. A floor that falls away at one end will show up as uneven running later.
- Glass and framing. Leaf weight follows from the glass specification and the frame, and leaf weight is what the operator has to be matched to.
None of this is difficult, but all of it is much easier to resolve at design stage. Send the elevation and a plan view early and these questions are answered in one exchange.
Sensors, safety and how the entrance behaves
The operator moves the leaf; the sensors decide when. Most complaints about an automatic entrance — a door that opens at passing traffic, closes too soon, or hesitates — are sensor and timing issues rather than drive faults.
Two distinct functions are involved. Activation detection opens the entrance when somebody approaches. Safety or presence detection holds it open while somebody is still in the opening. They are separate systems and they are aimed differently, which is why a door can open reliably and still close on a slow-moving user if the presence sensor is misaligned.
Opening speed, closing speed, hold-open time and reduced-speed behaviour are all set during commissioning. It is worth telling the commissioning technician how the entrance is actually used — a pharmacy with elderly customers wants a longer hold-open than a warehouse office — because factory defaults suit nobody in particular.
- Aim matters more than brand. A correctly aimed budget sensor outperforms a badly aimed premium one.
- Environment interferes. Rain, moving foliage, reflective floors and direct sun can all trigger or confuse detection.
- Never bypass a safety sensor. If a safety device is faulting, it is reporting a problem, not causing one.
Maintenance, wear parts and what fails first
An automatic entrance contains moving parts that wear in a predictable order, which is what makes planned servicing worthwhile. Failures are rarely sudden; they are usually a symptom that was audible for weeks.
- Track contamination. Dust and building sand act as a grinding paste under the rollers. Keeping the track clean is the cheapest maintenance there is.
- Rollers. Wear shows up as noise, vibration or heavy running before it shows up as a breakdown.
- Drive belt. A consumable rather than a failure. Belts stretch and lose tension over time and are replaced as routine.

Ask for a short handover at the end. Whoever manages the building should know how to switch operating mode, how to release the leaves manually in a power failure, and what the door is supposed to sound like when it is running well — because that last one is what makes an early fault obvious months later.
One last practical point: keep the commissioning record and the handover notes somewhere the building can find them.
