Aluminium French doors Krugersdorp: the classic double door
Krugersdorp homes often have French doors to a stoep facing the West Rand ridges. Outward-opening doors close against their seals when the summer storms push on them.
French doors are two hinged leaves in one frame that meet in the centre and swing open together, giving a wide, symmetrical opening to a patio, garden, stoep or balcony. Closed, they let in plenty of light through the glass; open, they connect the room to the outside. Aluminium keeps the classic look without the warping, swelling and painting of timber.
Aluminium French doors Krugersdorp: styles
- Large Pane: one large sheet of glass in each leaf, for the most light and a clean, modern look, from R12 228.
- Classic: a slim mid-rail across each leaf, from R13 035.
- Victorian: a traditional style for period homes, from R14 728.
- Half clad: solid aluminium below and glass above, from R17 749 in Classic.
- Full clad: solid aluminium with no glass, for privacy, from R20 780 in Large Pane.
- Y-Louvre: aluminium louvre blades for airflow under cover, from R19 526. Louvres are not weatherproof, so use them only under cover.
Sizes
French doors come 1 600 or 1 800 mm wide, with the width split equally between the two leaves. Classic and Victorian pairs come 2 100, 2 400 and 2 600 mm high, and Large Pane pairs 2 100 and 2 400 mm high, so the doors can line up with tall windows. For a single door, see hinged doors; for a wider opening, see sliding, stacking or folding doors.

Aluminium French doors Krugersdorp: open in or open out?
Every pair is built to open in or open out, and you choose the direction when you order; it is built into the doors, so it cannot be changed later. Both directions cost the same. Outward-opening French doors leave the room free of swinging leaves and close against their seals when the wind pushes on them; inward-opening doors suit a balcony or a narrow stoep where there is no room for the leaves to swing outside. Every product drawing is shown from inside, so you can see the swing before you order.
Aluminium French doors Krugersdorp or sliding doors?
French doors open the full width of the frame and give a classic, symmetrical look, but the leaves need room to swing. A sliding door needs no swing space and comes much wider, but one panel always stays in front of the other. Choose French doors for a bedroom, dining room or period home; choose a sliding door for a busy patio with furniture close to the door. See aluminium sliding doors Krugersdorp, from R4 025, and aluminium hinged doors Krugersdorp for single doors.
Where French doors work best
- Lounge or dining room to garden: the classic use, opening the room to the outside on summer evenings.
- Main bedroom to a patio or balcony: light and air with a private opening.
- Replacing old timber French doors: the same look, with no sanding or painting.
- Front entrance: a half-clad or full-clad pair gives a wide entrance with privacy.
- Covered braai area or scullery: a Y-Louvre pair for airflow under cover.
Glass and colours
Every glazed leaf has 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard, which holds together if broken. Doors are one of the places where South African building rules require safety glass, as set out in SANS 10400-N, published by the SABS. Double glazing is available at R1 952.50 per square metre excluding VAT. Frames come in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised, all at the same price.
Looking after French doors
Wipe the frames and glass with mild soapy water, never an abrasive cleaner, which scratches the powder coat. Lubricate the hinges and lock with a dry silicone spray once or twice a year, and check the seals before winter. If a leaf starts to catch where the two doors meet, have your installer check that the frame is square and the hinges are tight.
Measuring
Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and at both sides, and use the smallest size. Choose the standard pair that fits within it; the actual frame is 10 mm smaller than the catalogue size each way, which leaves the installer room to pack and seal the frame.
