Aluminium pivot doors Kempton Park: a wider entrance
In Kempton Park, a pivot door is most often fitted as the front door of a family home, and laminated glass cuts more noise from the nearby airport than ordinary glass.
A pivot door turns on a pivot set into the floor and another in the head of the frame, rather than on hinges down one side. Because the leaf is carried top and bottom, it can be wider than an ordinary hinged door, which is why pivot doors are popular as front doors and entrances. There is no opening direction to choose: the leaf rotates on its pivots.
Aluminium pivot doors Kempton Park: Large Pane or Classic?
- Large Pane: one large sheet of glass for the most light and the cleanest, most modern look, from R10 494.
- Classic: a slim mid-rail across the leaf, which breaks up the glass and suits a more traditional house, from R10 923.
Both styles come 1 200 or 1 500 mm wide and 2 100 or 2 400 mm high, in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised, all at the same price.
Pivot, single action or double action?
- Pivot door: the leaf rotates on pivots at the head and floor, 1 200 or 1 500 mm wide. The usual choice for a front door.
- Single-action door: swings one way on a pivot, 1 200 mm wide, 2 100 or 2 400 mm high, from R10 683.
- Double-action door: swings both ways, so people can push through from either side, 1 200 or 1 500 mm wide, from R10 494. Ideal for kitchens and busy passages.

Aluminium pivot doors Kempton Park or hinged doors?
A hinged door hangs on hinges down one side and is built to open in or open out. A pivot door turns on pivots at the head and floor, so it can be wider and has no opening direction to choose. Choose a pivot door for a wide, modern front entrance; choose a hinged door for back doors, kitchen doors and double doors, or where you want a half-clad or full-clad leaf for privacy. See aluminium hinged doors Kempton Park, from R7 566.
Planning the entrance
- Choose the width first: 1 200 mm suits most homes; 1 500 mm gives a grand entrance and makes moving furniture easier.
- Leave clear floor space inside and outside for the leaf to turn, and keep light switches and furniture out of its path.
- The floor must be level, because the bottom pivot is set into it.
- A roof overhang or covered porch keeps rain off the door and the threshold.
- Line the door head up with the windows on the same wall for a tidy front elevation.
Aluminium pivot doors Kempton Park: glass and colours
Every pivot door has 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard, which holds together if broken. Doors are one of the places where South African building rules require safety glass, as set out in SANS 10400-N, published by the SABS. Double glazing is available at R1 952.50 per square metre excluding VAT. Frames come in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised, all at the same price; Black and Charcoal are popular for modern front doors.
Looking after pivot doors
Wipe the frame and glass with mild soapy water, never an abrasive cleaner, which scratches the powder coat. Keep grit and leaves away from the bottom pivot and the threshold, lubricate the lock with a dry silicone spray once or twice a year, and check the seals before winter. If the leaf starts to catch, have your installer check that the pivots are still aligned. Our maintenance guide covers the routine.
Security and privacy
Laminated glass cracks but holds together, so getting through a pivot door takes time and makes noise, which deters most intruders. For a front door that faces the street, a covered porch with good lighting and a clear view of the entrance from inside the house add security without hiding the entrance.
Measuring
Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and at both sides, and use the smallest size. Choose the standard door that fits within it; the actual frame is 10 mm smaller than the catalogue size each way, which leaves the installer room to pack and seal the frame. On a new build, give your builder the catalogue size and the frame size before the opening is built.
