What is SANS 1263?
SANS 1263 is the South African standard for safety glazing materials. It defines the categories of safety glazing and the requirements a material must meet to be classified and used as safety glass — including that it be permanently marked so it can be identified after installation.

When a pane needs to be “safety glass”, SANS 1263 is the standard that tells us what that means in South Africa. It sits behind the glazing requirements of the building regulations: where SANS 10400-N calls for safety glazing in a hazardous location, SANS 1263 is the material standard that the glass itself must satisfy. This guide explains its purpose and the principles behind it, without reproducing the standard.

The purpose of the standard

SANS 1263 exists to make sure that glass sold and installed as safety glazing genuinely performs as safety glazing. Ordinary annealed glass can break into large, sharp shards; safety glazing materials are designed to fail more safely — either by holding together or by breaking into small, relatively harmless pieces. By setting classification and marking requirements, the standard gives specifiers, installers and inspectors a common definition of what counts as safety glass, so the term means the same thing on every project.

Categories of safety glazing material

SANS 1263 is published in parts that address different risks. The part most relevant to everyday building safety deals with human impact — the risk of a person walking into or falling against glass. Other parts address burglar and vandal resistance and bullet resistance, which are specialist security categories rather than the general human-impact safety that applies to ordinary doors and low-level glazing. Choosing the right category means matching the material to the actual risk in that location.

Impact-resistance principles

At the heart of the human-impact part is a simple idea: a safety glazing material should be assessed against a defined impact test and fail safely if struck. The standard sets out how a material is evaluated and classified so that products can be compared on a consistent basis. Both laminated and toughened glass can qualify as human-impact safety glazing, because each fails in a controlled way — laminated by staying together, toughened by breaking into granules.

Marking and identification

A practical requirement that flows from SANS 1263 is permanent marking. Safety glazing should carry a permanent mark that remains visible after installation, identifying it as a compliant safety glazing material. Why the correct safety glass must be used

Specifying safety glass in general is not enough; it must be the right category for the application. Human-impact glazing in a door is a different requirement from burglar-resistant or bullet-resistant glazing, and using the wrong one either leaves a risk unaddressed or adds unnecessary cost. Where the correct classification or specification is uncertain, it should be confirmed against SANS 1263 and the project design rather than assumed.

What this means in practice on a real project

Reading about sans 1263 is one thing; evidencing it on a live project is another. In our experience the difficulties almost never come from the requirement itself — they come from nobody having decided, early enough, who is responsible for the decision and who will produce the paperwork at the end. That question is worth settling at specification stage rather than at handover.

Decide who is responsible before the glass is ordered

On a supply-only order the responsibilities split. The supplier is accountable for manufacturing what was specified and for describing accurately what has been supplied. The party doing the installing is accountable for how the unit is fitted, packed and sealed. Whoever signs off the completed work is accountable for confirming that the installed result is appropriate for the application. Those are three different roles, and on smaller projects they are often three different companies, which is exactly how gaps appear.

Ask for the documentation while the job is still open

Whatever record your project needs is far easier to obtain during the contract than a year later. Keep the order confirmation showing what was supplied, keep the delivery documentation, and photograph the glass markings before the units are installed and the edges are covered by beading. Those three items answer most later questions about what was actually fitted, and they cost nothing to collect at the time.
