Aluminium stacking doors Benoni: open most of the wall
Benoni homes near the lakes want wide glass to the view. A 4 or 6-panel Premier Multi stacking door opens the lounge to the patio, up to 2 700 mm high for tall openings.
A stacking door is a multi-track sliding door. The panels run in several tracks, so instead of one panel sliding past one fixed panel, the panels slide and park behind each other. Open, it leaves a much wider gap than an ordinary 2-panel sliding door of the same width; closed, it is a wall of glass. The stacked panels stay upright in the frame, so nothing swings into the room or onto the patio.
Aluminium stacking doors Benoni: sizes and panels
- 2 panels: 1 500 to 3 000 mm wide, for a kitchen, bedroom or small patio.
- 3 panels: 1 800 to 4 500 mm wide, the most popular choice for a lounge opening onto a patio.
- 4 panels: 3 000 to 6 000 mm wide, for wide living rooms and entertainment areas.
- 6 panels: 4 500 to 7 500 mm wide, to open most of a long wall to a pool or garden.
- Heights: 2 100, 2 400 and 2 700 mm, so the door can line up with tall windows or a raised ceiling.
There are 102 standard Premier Multi sizes. Every product drawing is shown from inside, so you can see which panels slide before you order; see sliding door configurations.

Aluminium stacking doors Benoni or folding doors?
Both open a wide wall, in different ways. A stacking door keeps its panels upright and stacks them inside the opening, so the panels never swing out, there are no hinges, and each panel can be left partly open for air. A folding door folds its panels to one side or both sides and clears almost the whole opening, but the folded stack needs space on the patio or inside the room.
- Choose a stacking door for a patio with furniture close to the door, a wall that faces wind, or when you want to leave one panel open for air.
- Choose a folding door to clear the full width for entertaining; see aluminium folding doors Benoni, from R16 041.
- Choose an ordinary sliding door for a smaller budget; see aluminium sliding doors, from R4 025.

Where stacking doors work best
- Lounge to patio: a 3 or 4-panel door turns the patio into part of the room in summer and closes to a wall of glass in winter.
- Entertainment area to pool: a 6-panel door opens most of a long wall, with the panels parked neatly at one end.
- Kitchen to braai area: slide one panel open to pass food and drinks through, or open them all for a party.
- Replacing old French or sliding doors: widen the opening once and gain far more glass and air.
- Rooms facing the wind: the panels stay in their tracks, so there is nothing to catch the wind or blow shut.
Aluminium stacking doors Benoni: planning the opening
- Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and at both sides, and use the smallest size. The actual frame is 10 mm smaller than the catalogue size each way.
- The floor must be level across the full width, because every panel runs in a bottom track.
- The lintel must be straight and strong enough for the span; on a new opening, ask your builder or engineer to size it.
- Plan a roof overhang or covered patio over the door to keep rain off the tracks.
- Decide which side the panels should stack, so the open gap faces the patio or the view.
Aluminium stacking doors Benoni: glass and colours
Premier Multi stacking doors have 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard. Doors are one of the places where South African building rules require safety glass, as set out in SANS 10400-N, published by the SABS. Double glazing is available at R1 952.50 per square metre excluding VAT; see double-glazed sliding doors. Frames come in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised, all at the same price.

Looking after stacking doors
Vacuum the tracks regularly, because grit in a track is the main cause of a stiff panel, and keep the drainage slots clear before the summer storms. Wipe the frames with mild soapy water, and check the rollers if a panel starts to drag. See sliding door rollers and sliding door locks.
