Double glazed sliding doors keep a big glass opening warm in winter and quieter all year, without giving up the view. In our shop you can add double glazing to any StormSeal, Elite, Premier, Horizon or Premier Multi sliding door online, see the exact price, and pay for it there and then. This guide shows the prices, explains how they are worked out, and helps you choose the right range for double glazed sliding doors.

Every price is a regular standard-size price, excluding VAT, the same in all five colours. To see every size, browse our aluminium sliding doors, or compare them with aluminium folding doors and aluminium stacking doors, which can be double glazed too.

Double glazed sliding doors prices for five ranges at 2 400 and 3 000 mm wide, single glazed and double glazed

What are double glazed sliding doors?

Double glazed sliding doors have a sealed glass unit in every panel instead of a single pane. Our unit is 24.76 mm thick: 6.38 mm laminated safety glass, a 12 mm sealed cavity, and a second pane of 6.38 mm laminated safety glass. Both panes are safety glass, which matters on a door, where people and furniture brush against the glass every day.

A sliding door is often the largest area of glass in a house. On a 3 000 × 2 100 mm door that is more than six square metres facing the garden, which is why double glazed sliding doors make such a noticeable difference to a living room on a cold night or next to a busy road.

Wider, taller and multi-panel sizes are priced on their own pages. The Patio sliding range is our entry door and is supplied single glazed, so double glazed sliding doors start with the StormSeal range.

How the double glazing price is worked out

Double glazing on a door costs R1 952.50 per square metre of the door size, excluding VAT, added to the price of the door. It does not depend on the colour or the number of panels, only on the width and height of the door.

Door sizeAreaDouble glazing adds
2 400 × 2 100 mm5.04 m²+R9 840.60
3 000 × 2 100 mm6.30 m²+R12 300.75
3 600 × 2 100 mm7.56 m²+R14 760.90
4 800 × 2 400 mm11.52 m²+R22 492.80

So a 3 000 × 2 100 mm Premier sliding door at R20 024 becomes R32 324.75 as one of our double glazed sliding doors. The price on each product page updates as soon as you choose double glazing in the Glass list.

How double glazed sliding doors are priced and ordered online in four steps

Which range suits double glazed sliding doors?

All five ranges take the same 24.76 mm unit, so the glass performs the same. Choose the range for the opening and the way you use it.

  • StormSeal from R10 149 single glazed: a choice of low or high threshold on every size, for openings that take wind-driven rain.
  • Elite from R10 872: made in 2 100, 2 400 and 2 700 mm heights.
  • Premier from R13 619: our heavy-duty frame for large, tall openings in daily use, up to 7 500 mm wide.
  • Horizon from R14 559: slimline, with large panes and narrow sightlines, and every panel slides.
  • Premier Multi from R17 440: stacking panels on several tracks so most of the wall opens.

A double-glazed unit weighs roughly twice as much as a single pane of laminated glass, so for the widest and tallest double glazed sliding doors a heavier range such as Premier or Premier Multi is the comfortable choice. Our guide to premium aluminium windows and doors compares the ranges in more detail.

Are double glazed sliding doors worth it?

Double glazed sliding doors pay off most where the door is large, the room is used a lot, and one of these applies:

  • Winter cold. A living room on the Highveld loses a lot of heat through six square metres of single glass after dark.
  • Noise. Doors facing a road, a school, a sports field or a neighbour’s entertainment area.
  • Air-conditioned rooms. Better glass keeps cooled or heated air in, so the unit runs less.
  • New builds. SANS 10400-XA, published by the SABS, sets energy rules for glazing in new homes, and better glass helps a plan meet them.

Think about the whole room, too. If the sliding door is double glazed but the windows beside it are not, the room still loses heat through the windows. Many homeowners double glaze the big door and the windows in the same room, and keep standard laminated safety glass in the rest of the house.

If the main problem is hot afternoon sun rather than cold or noise, compare Solarshield laminated glass, which costs less. For a full comparison, read the benefits of double glazing and our guide to double glazed windows.

Double glazed folding, stacking and hinged doors

Sliding doors are not the only doors we double glaze. The same R1 952.50 per square metre applies to Vistafold and Vista Duo folding doors, Premier Multi stacking doors, and hinged, pivot and stable doors. A 900 × 2 100 mm hinged door, for example, adds R3 690.23 for double glazing. Louvre and clad designs, and the few sizes glazed with toughened glass, are supplied with their standard glazing.

Layouts: 2, 3, 4 and 6 panels

Every range comes in several panel layouts, and the layout decides how much of the opening you can walk through. In the usual notation, X is a panel that slides and O is a fixed panel, always described as seen from inside.

  • 2 panels (OX or XO): one fixed and one sliding panel. Half the opening clears. The usual choice up to about 3 000 mm wide.
  • 3 panels: on the multi-track ranges, all three panels slide and stack, so about two thirds of the opening clears.
  • 4 panels (OXXO): two fixed panels at the sides and two sliding panels that meet in the middle, so the centre half of the opening clears.
  • 6 panels: for the widest openings, up to 7 500 mm, with the sliding panels arranged to suit the range.

Our guide to sliding door configurations explains each layout with drawings. Whatever the layout, double glazing is priced on the overall door size, not the number of panels.

Measuring the opening

Measure the width of the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, centre and right, and take the smallest figure each way. Then choose the standard size that fits. If your opening falls between sizes, your installer can usually fit the next size down and close the gap, and the online estimator can price the next size up for you. Our guide on how to measure aluminium doors shows each step.

Check the floor too. A sliding door needs a level sill to run smoothly, and a heavier glazed panel makes a level sill more important, not less. If the floor slopes towards the house, your builder should correct it before the door goes in.

Colours and finishes

All our sliding doors are made to order in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black or Natural Anodised, and all five colours are the same price. Black and Charcoal frames make the glass look larger from inside; White and Bronze suit most traditional South African homes. Whichever colour you choose, wash the frames now and then with mild soapy water to keep the finish looking new.

Caring for double glazed sliding doors

Double glazed sliding doors need the same care as any sliding door. Vacuum the bottom track and wipe it clean so the rollers run freely, keep the drainage slots clear, and wash the frames with mild soapy water. Because the panels are heavier, never force a door that sticks; clean the track first.

Mist between the two panes, inside the sealed unit, means the seal has failed and that unit should be replaced. Condensation on the room side on a cold morning is normal in a humid room and clears when you air it.

How to order double glazed sliding doors

  • Pay online by card or instant EFT through Yoco, Ozow or Peach Payments.
  • We make the door to order in 3 to 5 working days. Collect free from Laser Park or have it delivered; delivery is worked out at checkout by distance.

Our doors are supply only, so your own builder or installer fits them. Tell your installer the panels are double glazed so they bring enough hands for the heavier panels.

Double glazed sliding doors: frequently asked questions

How much do double glazed sliding doors cost?

In our shop a 2 400 × 2 100 mm StormSeal door is R22 563.60 double glazed and a 3 000 × 2 100 mm Premier door is R32 324.75, excluding VAT. Every size has its own price online.

What does double glazing add to a sliding door?

R1 952.50 per square metre of the door size, excluding VAT. A 3 000 × 2 100 mm door is 6.3 m², so double glazing adds R12 300.75.

Can I double glaze a Patio sliding door?

No. The Patio range is our entry sliding door and is supplied with single 6.38 mm laminated safety glass. Double glazed sliding doors start with the StormSeal range.

What glass is in double glazed sliding doors?

A 24.76 mm sealed unit made of 6.38 mm laminated safety glass, a 12 mm cavity and a second pane of 6.38 mm laminated safety glass.

Does the colour change the price?

No. White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised are the same price, and so is the double glazing.

Can double glazing be added to my door later?

It is best chosen when you order, because the door is glazed for the thicker unit in our workshop. Replacing single glass in an existing door is a separate job for a glazier.

How long do double glazed sliding doors take?

They are made to order in 3 to 5 working days once payment clears.

Do you install double glazed sliding doors?

No. Our doors are supply only and are fitted by your own builder or installer. We deliver across South Africa or you can collect free from Laser Park, Johannesburg.
