Premium Aluminium Windows and Doors: The 7 Best Upgrades

5 November 2026·9 min read·By Marcel Coetzee

Premium aluminium windows and doors are not just a dearer price tag. You pay more for real things: a heavier frame that carries bigger glass, panels that slide or fold so the whole wall opens, better glass, a weather-tight threshold, and a finish that lasts. This guide explains each feature of premium aluminium windows and doors, shows what it costs in our shop, and helps you decide where premium is worth it in your home and where a standard range will do.

What makes aluminium windows and doors premium?

Aluminium is strong for its weight, does not rot or rust, and holds its shape in the sun. That is true of every aluminium window and door. What separates premium aluminium windows and doors from standard ones is the system around the glass: how deep and heavy the profiles are, how many tracks the door runs on, how big the panes can be, what glass goes in them, and how carefully the frame meets the floor and the wall.

In practice, premium shows up in seven places. They are listed below in the order they usually matter most, with the Coetz™ range that delivers each one.

1. A heavier frame for wider and taller openings

The bigger the opening, the more the frame has to carry. A standard patio sliding door is ideal for an ordinary 1 500 to 3 000 mm opening, but large panes on a light frame can feel loose on a wide span. Our heavier sliding door systems are built for those openings.

  • Patio sliding doors are our entry range, from R4 025, for everyday openings.
  • StormSeal sliding doors add a choice of low or high threshold, from R10 149, and Elite sliding doors come in heights up to 2 700 mm, from R10 872.
  • Premier sliding doors are our heavy-duty range on a stronger frame, from R13 619, made up to 7 500 mm wide and 2 700 mm high for large, tall openings in daily use.
  • Horizon and Premier Multi sliding doors are multi-track systems where every panel slides, from R14 559 and R17 440.

Windows follow the same idea. Many of our window sizes come with a choice of frame: the 30.5 mm standard frame, a 36 mm heavy-duty frame or a 44 mm commercial frame. Top hung windows can also be ordered in the Casement 34 frame, which is always double glazed. A deeper frame is stiffer, takes heavier glass and suits larger, exposed windows.

2. More glass and slimmer sightlines

The point of a big door is the view. Premium aluminium windows and doors use the strength of the frame to hold larger panes with less aluminium in the way. Our Horizon sliding doors are the slimline choice: large glass panes and narrow sightlines, made in 2, 3, 4 and 6-panel layouts from 1 500 to 7 500 mm wide and up to 2 700 mm high.

Because Horizon runs on several tracks, every panel slides. None of the opening is given up to a fixed pane, so you can park the panels where you want them and leave a wide gap.

3. Better glass: safety glass, tints and double glazing

Every Coetz™ window and door is glazed with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard, and a few of the largest door panels use toughened safety glass where their size calls for it. Safety glass in doors and low windows is a building requirement, and the standards behind it are published by the SABS. That part is not an upgrade; it comes with every size.

The premium step is performance glass. On each product page you can choose obscure glass for privacy, Colourvue Cool Tint, or Solarshield laminated glass to cut glare and heat from a west-facing opening. For sound and heat, our doors (except the Patio range) can be double glazed with a 24.76 mm unit for R1 952.50 per square metre of the door size. Windows with the 30.5 mm standard frame (top hung, side hung and fixed) can be double glazed too, and top hung windows can be ordered in the Casement 34 frame, which comes double glazed.

4. Every panel moving: stacking and folding doors

A standard sliding door always leaves at least one fixed panel, so about half the opening stays closed. Premium aluminium windows and doors for entertainment areas solve that in two ways.

  • Stacking doors. Premier Multi sliding doors stack several large panels along their tracks, up to 7 500 mm wide, so most of the wall opens.
  • Folding doors. Vistafold doors fold 3 to 10 panels to the side, from R19 876, and the compact Vista Duo range starts at R16 041. When they are open, almost the whole opening is clear.

Folding doors clear more of the opening; stacking doors keep big, uninterrupted panes when they are closed. Both are the classic premium choice between a living room and a patio.

5. A threshold that keeps the weather out

Where the door meets the floor is where water and wind get in. Our StormSeal sliding doors come with a choice of low or high threshold on every size. The low threshold gives an easier step-through; the high threshold uses high-profile interlockers on both meeting stiles and a higher sill for openings that take wind-driven rain. Choosing the right threshold for an exposed opening is one of the cheapest upgrades in premium aluminium windows and doors.

6. A finish that lasts, in any of five colours

All our frames are powder coated or anodised to order in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black or Natural Anodised. All five colours cost the same on every window and door, so premium aluminium windows and doors in Black or Natural Anodised cost nothing extra. Wash the frames with mild soapy water now and then, and keep the sliding tracks free of grit, and the finish and rollers will last.

7. Made to order, to the right size

Premium aluminium windows and doors also have to fit. Every standard size in our shop is made to order in our Laser Park workshop in 3 to 5 working days once payment clears. If your opening is not a standard size, our online estimator prices it at the next size up and draws it, and Coetz™ Custom quotes bespoke work.

Where premium is worth paying for, and where it is not

You do not need premium aluminium windows and doors in every opening. Spend where the size, the weather or daily use calls for it, and save elsewhere.

  • Worth it: openings wider than about 3 000 mm or taller than 2 400 mm, the main door to a patio or pool, walls facing wind-driven rain, and rooms where you want the whole wall to open.
  • Worth it: west-facing glass, where Solarshield or double glazing makes the room more comfortable.
  • Not needed: bathrooms, scullery and bedroom windows, and small doors to a yard. A standard top hung window or a Patio sliding door is the sensible choice there.

Mixing ranges is normal. Many homes pair one premium door to the garden with standard windows everywhere else, all in the same colour, so the house still looks like one design.

A buyer’s checklist for premium aluminium windows and doors

Before you order premium aluminium windows and doors, walk through each opening with this list. It takes ten minutes and saves expensive changes later.

  • Measure the opening, not the old frame. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height at both sides, and use the smallest figure. Our guide to measuring aluminium doors shows how.
  • Decide how much of the wall must open. If you want the whole opening clear, choose a stacking or folding door; if a half opening is fine, a sliding door with a fixed panel costs less.
  • Check the height. Our premium sliding door ranges are made in 2 100, 2 400 and 2 700 mm heights. A taller door feels grander, but the opening, lintel and ceiling must allow for it.
  • Look at the weather side. For an opening that takes wind-driven rain, choose a high threshold or a covered patio.
  • Pick the glass for the sun. North and west-facing glass benefits most from Solarshield or double glazing.
  • Choose one colour for the house. All five colours cost the same, so match the premium door to the rest of your windows.
  • Book your installer early. Premium aluminium windows and doors are supply only, so line up a builder or installer for the delivery date.

Bring the list to our online estimator and you can price every opening in one go, premium doors and standard windows together, then pay for the whole project online.

Premium aluminium windows and doors: frequently asked questions

What makes aluminium windows and doors premium?

A heavier frame for bigger openings, larger glass with slimmer sightlines, panels that all slide or fold, better glass, a weather-tight threshold and a lasting finish. Each one is a real feature, not just a higher price.

How much do premium aluminium sliding doors cost?

In our shop, Premier heavy-duty sliding doors start at R13 619, Horizon slimline doors at R14 559 and Premier Multi stacking doors at R17 440, excluding VAT. The price of each standard size is listed on its range page.

Is double glazing part of premium aluminium windows and doors?

It is an upgrade you choose. Our doors, except the Patio range, can be double glazed for R1 952.50 per square metre, and so can windows with the 30.5 mm standard frame. Top hung windows in the Casement 34 frame always come double glazed.

Do premium colours cost more?

No. White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised are all the same price on every window and door.

Which is better, a stacking door or a folding door?

A folding door clears more of the opening when it is open. A stacking door keeps big, unbroken panes when it is closed. Both are premium choices for a wide opening to a patio.

Do you install premium aluminium windows and doors?

No. Our windows and doors are supply only and are fitted by your own builder or installer. We deliver nationally or you can collect free from Laser Park, Johannesburg.
