Aluminium stacking doors: a six-panel Premier Multi stacking door drawn as viewed from inside

Aluminium stacking doors: the key facts, in plain language.

"Stacking doors" is the everyday name for wide multi-panel doors whose panels slide and park together, opening most of the wall. In the Coetz™ range that means two families: Premier Multi sliding doors, where every panel slides and stacks, and Vistafold folding doors, where panels fold and stack to one side.

Slide-stacking vs fold-stacking

Premier Multi doors (2 to 6 panels, up to 7500 mm wide) slide panels behind one another — no floor track swing zone, clean lines, and any panel can be used day-to-day. Vistafold doors (3 to 10 panels) and Vista Duo doors (2 or 4 panels) hinge-fold their panels and stack them at the jamb, opening up to the full width. Both are drawn viewed from the inside with every moving panel marked.

Dimensions available

Premier Multi: 1500–7500 mm wide, 2100/2400/2700 mm high. Vistafold: 1800–7200 mm wide in 3 to 10-panel configurations, 2100–2700 mm high. Vista Duo: 1200–3600 mm wide in 2 or 4 panels, 2100 or 2400 mm high.

Working with Coetz Glazing

Every aluminium stacking doors order at Coetz starts with the sizes you supply, so we can confirm the configuration, the colour and the glass before quoting a fixed price.

We manufacture each unit from a durable aluminium frame, glaze it with 6.38mm laminated safety glass as standard (toughened on some Patio and larger Elite sliding doors), and finish it to your specification.

Because we manufacture and supply every aluminium stacking door ourselves, one accountable team looks after your order from quote to delivery, ready for installation by your own contractor.

Why aluminium is the right choice

For aluminium stacking doors, aluminium is the material that lasts. It will not rust, warp or rot, it shrugs off the South African sun, and it needs almost no maintenance beyond an occasional wipe-down.

Our frames are available in five finishes – White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black and Natural Anodised, all at the same price, so the windows match the architecture instead of fighting it. Slim sightlines let in more glass and more daylight.

Every unit is glazed with 6.38mm laminated safety glass as standard, which improves security, cuts outside noise and holds together if it is ever broken.

We manufacture aluminium stacking doors to your exact sizes in our own factory, so there is no waiting on imported stock and no compromise on fit. Large and repeat orders are planned and delivered on schedule.

From a single building to a full development, Coetz manufactures and supplies what we make. One accountable team, one point of contact, and our manufacturer warranty stands behind every order.

Delivery and collection

Every item is manufactured to order and supplied ready for collection from our Laser Park, Johannesburg premises or delivered — within 3–5 working days of your order in Gauteng, or ready in 3–5 working days and delivered in 3–7 working days elsewhere, with the exact rate calculated automatically at checkout. All catalogue prices exclude VAT.

Stackaway doors: the same thing by another name

Stackaway doors, stacker doors and stacking sliding doors are all names for the same idea: several sliding panels that run on their own tracks and stack neatly behind one another, so most of a wide opening clears. Our stackaway doors are the Premier Multi range, made in 2, 3, 4 and 6-panel layouts up to 7 500 mm wide and 2 700 mm high, from R17 440 excluding VAT. If you want the panels to fold to the side instead of sliding behind each other, see our aluminium folding doors.

How aluminium stacking doors work

On a Premier Multi door, each sliding panel runs in its own channel in the bottom track. As you slide the first panel, it picks up the next, and they travel together until the whole set is stacked. The bottom track carries the weight; the top channel only keeps the panels upright. That is why the condition of the track matters more on stacking doors than on almost any other aluminium product.

How many panels, and where they stack

On aluminium stacking doors, the panel count follows the opening width, not preference. A wider opening needs more panels, and more panels mean a deeper stack that takes up part of the opening when the doors are open. Choose the configuration that leaves the opening where you want it, and check the drawing on the product – it shows every moving panel, viewed from inside.

On a Vistafold bi-fold door, the panels fold and stand stacked at the end of the opening, on the outside. Keep that area clear of furniture, plants and burglar bars.

Stacking vs folding doors

  • Folding doors open slightly more of the opening, because the folded panels stand at the end rather than overlapping in the opening. They work best fully open or fully closed.
  • Sliding aluminium stacking doors are easier day to day. You can slide one panel a little way for air without unfolding anything, and nothing projects into the room or the patio.

Plan the threshold early

On aluminium stacking doors, a multi-channel bottom track sits above the floor unless the floor was built up to recess it. If a flush threshold matters to you, plan it with your builder before the screed goes down. Measure the height of a stacking door from the finished floor level – see how to measure aluminium doors.

Keeping aluminium stacking doors running

  • Vacuum the bottom track. Grit is the most common cause of doors that have gone heavy, and it is free to fix.
  • Check the rollers. A wheel that will not spin freely by hand is on its way out – see aluminium sliding door rollers.
  • Keep the drainage slots clear, or water sits in the track and works on the rollers from below.
  • Clean the meeting stiles where the panels overlap, so the doors close onto their seals properly.

Frequently asked questions

What is an aluminium stacking door?

A wide multi-panel door whose panels slide or fold and park ("stack") together, opening most of the width of the wall. Coetz™ supplies slide-stacking (Premier Multi) and fold-stacking (Vistafold) ranges.

How wide can a stacking door go?

Standard configurations run up to 7500 mm wide in the Premier Multi range and up to 7200 mm in the Vistafold range, in panel counts from 2 to 10 depending on the range.

Which is better — sliding-stack or folding-stack?

Sliding stacks need no fold-out clearance and slide easily every day; folding stacks open the full width of the opening. The right choice depends on how much of the opening you need clear and where the panels can park.

Are stacking doors priced online?

Yes — every standard configuration has an online price excluding VAT, with glass and finish options confirmed before manufacture.
