Kruger National Park Fly Screens: Lodges, Homes and Prices

5 November 2026·8 min read·By Marcel Coetzee

Aluminium fly screens: six reasons to fit roll-up screens to your windows

Kruger National Park fly screens solve the oldest problem of Lowveld living: the evening breeze arrives at exactly the same time as the mosquitoes, moths and flies. Fly screens are used wherever insects bother people, and few parts of South Africa have more of them than the warm, wet bush around the park.

This guide is for the homes, lodges, guest houses and staff housing in the towns and private reserves on the borders of the park, from Hazyview, White River and Malelane to Komatipoort, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. It explains how our roll-up aluminium fly screens work, which windows they fit, what they cost and how they reach you from our workshop in Johannesburg.

Kruger National Park fly screens: how a roll-up aluminium fly screen works on an opening sash

Why insects make fly screens worth it around the Kruger

Summers in the Lowveld are hot and humid, and most of the rain falls between about October and March. Warm nights, standing water after storms and lights left on in the evening bring insects to every open window: mosquitoes from dusk, moths and beetles around the lights, and flies through the day. Closing the windows is no answer when a bedroom is still warm long after dark.

The park and the surrounding Lowveld are also a malaria area, with the highest risk in the rainy months. A screen on the windows you leave open is a simple physical barrier that works alongside mosquito nets, repellent and medical advice. It is not a substitute for that advice; read the NICD malaria guidance before you travel or move to the area.

These are the reasons people near the park fit screens:

  • Sleep with the windows open. The mesh lets the night air in and keeps the insects out.
  • Keep insects off beds, food and guests. Fewer moths around the lights, fewer flies in the kitchen.
  • Out of sight by day. A roll-up screen disappears into its head, so the view of the bush stays clear.
  • A frame that does not rust. Aluminium copes with the humid summers and the dry, dusty winters.

How our roll-up aluminium fly screens work

A roll-up fly screen has four parts. An aluminium outer frame is fixed around the opening sash, and an aluminium screen sash is joined at the corners with cleats. The insect mesh is held in with a spline gasket and rolls up into the head of the screen, and a pull handle lowers the screen and raises it again.

The screens cover the opening sash only, not the whole window. Fixed panes do not open, so they do not need a screen. A single opener window needs one screen and a twin opener needs two. For the full detail, read our aluminium fly screens guide.

Kruger National Park fly screens for lodges and guest houses

A lodge or guest house has many rooms, and every room has guests who want the window open at night. The easiest way to order is to list every window in the Whole project tab of our online estimator and tick Fly screens on each top hung, side hung, Genius or casement insert line. The screens are then priced and ordered with the windows, so everything arrives together.

In practice the screens roll up in the morning so guests see the bush, and come down at dusk when the insects start. It takes one short explanation at check-in, and the handle does the rest.

Choosing Kruger National Park fly screens room by room

You do not have to screen every window in the building. Start with the rooms where people sleep and eat, and where the lights stay on after dark.

  • Bedrooms and guest suites. The priority. Screen every opener so the room can be aired all night.
  • Kitchens and dining areas. Screens keep flies off food during the day and moths away from the lights at night.
  • Lounges and verandas with windows. Screen the openers you actually use in the evening; leave the fixed panes as they are.
  • Bathrooms. Usually a small opener for ventilation, and an easy, low-cost screen.

Kruger National Park fly screens are priced per opener, so it is easy to work out the cost of the rooms that matter most first and add the rest later. The screens for a window can be bought with it or on their own afterwards.

Which windows can take a fly screen?

Roll-up fly screens are made for windows that open on hinges: top hung aluminium windows, side hung windows and our casement windows with opening sashes. Every Coetz™ window that has opener sizes on its product page can take them, in the 30.5 mm Standard frame and in the Casement 34 frame.

The screens are made to the opener sizes of our own windows. If your windows came from another supplier, measure the opening sash and compare it with the sizes listed on the roll-up fly screen page before you order.

What to measure before you order Kruger National Park fly screens

Kruger National Park fly screens are made to the opener size, not the overall window size, so the opener is what you measure. If the windows are ours, the opener sizes are already on each window product page and nothing needs measuring.

  • Count the openers. Walk each room and count the sashes that open. Fixed panes do not need a screen.
  • Note the opener sizes. Width first, then height, in millimetres, from the window product page or your order.
  • Group by room. Bedrooms first, then kitchens and living areas, so you can order in stages if you want to.
  • Check the frame. Screens fit our 30.5 mm Standard and Casement 34 frames. For another supplier’s windows, compare the opener with our listed sizes first.

With that list in hand, ordering Kruger National Park fly screens takes a few minutes in the estimator, and the price for every opener is shown before you pay.

Kruger National Park fly screens: roll-up versus fixed aluminium fly screens compared

What Kruger National Park fly screens cost

Fly screens are priced per opener, excluding VAT. They run from R938.40 for a 250 × 600 mm opener to R3 051.41 for a 900 × 1 800 mm opener. A 600 × 600 mm opener, the size on a 1 200 × 1 200 mm top hung window, is R1 324.45, and a 600 × 900 mm opener is R1 655.36. Every size is priced on the roll-up fly screen page and in the estimator.

Fly screens for homes and staff housing near the park

Not every building near the park is a lodge. Family homes in Hazyview, White River and Marloth Park, farm houses along the Sabie and Crocodile rivers, and staff housing on private reserves have exactly the same insects. The same Kruger National Park fly screens work there: one screen per opening sash, rolled up out of the way in the day and pulled down at dusk.

If you are building or renovating, plan the screens with the windows. Choosing top hung or side hung windows with sensible opener sizes keeps the screens affordable, and ordering everything together means one delivery to the Lowveld instead of two.

Kruger National Park fly screens for holiday homes

Many houses around the park are holiday homes or short-stay rentals, especially in Marloth Park and around Hazyview. Guests arrive, open every window and leave the lights on, and the owner hears about the insects in the reviews. Kruger National Park fly screens fix that without anyone having to remember to close a window.

For a rental, choose screens for every bedroom opener and the kitchen first. They roll away when not needed, so the house still looks open and bright in photographs, and there is no loose mesh for guests to damage. Kruger National Park fly screens can be added to existing Coetz™ windows at any time, so a rental can be done room by room between bookings.

Delivery to the Kruger area

Our windows and screens are made to order at our workshop in Laser Park, Johannesburg. Delivery is worked out at checkout from the straight-line distance to your address: R650 within 60 km of Laser Park, plus R7 per kilometre, there and back, for every kilometre beyond that. Oversized orders start from R950 instead of R650. Collection from Laser Park is free.

Order your Kruger National Park fly screens together with the windows and one delivery covers both. The delivery page explains the rates in full.

Fitting and care in the bush

Kruger National Park fly screens from Coetz™ are supply only, so the screen is fitted by your installer, usually at the same time as the window. Looking after them is simple. Brush or vacuum the mesh now and then, wipe the frame with mild soapy water, and keep the head of the screen free of the dust and leaves that the dry season brings. Guide the screen up with the handle rather than letting it spring back, and it will roll smoothly for years.

Kruger National Park fly screens: frequently asked questions

Do fly screens keep mosquitoes out?

Yes, from the window they cover. The mesh stops mosquitoes, flies and moths coming through the opening sash. Keep using nets and repellent in the rainy season, and follow medical advice on malaria.

Can I order fly screens for a whole lodge?

Yes. List every window in the Whole project tab of the online estimator and tick Fly screens on each line. The screens are priced and delivered with the windows.

How much is delivery to Hazyview or Hoedspruit?

It depends on the distance from Laser Park: R650 within 60 km, plus R7 per kilometre there and back beyond that. Checkout shows the exact amount for your address.

Will the screens rust in the Lowveld humidity?

The frames are aluminium, which does not rust. Wipe them down now and then and keep the head of the screen clean.

Can I buy fly screens without new windows?

Yes. Choose your opener size on the roll-up fly screen page, or use Buy the fly screens only on a window product page.

Are Kruger National Park fly screens worth it for a rental?

Usually, yes. Insects are one of the most common complaints in Lowveld holiday homes, and a screen on every bedroom opener lets guests sleep with the windows open. The screens roll away in the day, so the rooms still feel open.

Who fits the screens?

Your installer. Our windows and screens are supply only, and the screens ship with your order.
