Aluminium Doors with Glass: Styles, Glass Options and Prices

5 November 2026·8 min read·By Marcel Coetzee

Hinged Door 900 × 2100 mm – Classic (Glazed), White – opens out – elevation drawing viewed from inside

Aluminium doors with glass bring daylight into the house, open up the view to the garden, and still lock up securely at night. Glass and aluminium suit each other: the slim, strong frame holds a large pane without sagging, and it never rots, swells or needs painting. This guide covers every type of glass door we make, the glass you can choose, what it costs, and how to pick the right door for each opening.

For doors that need privacy, see obscure glass.

Every price is a regular standard-size price, excluding VAT, the same in all five colours. You can browse all our aluminium doors, or go straight to aluminium hinged doors and aluminium sliding doors.

Aluminium doors with glass: the glass options and what each adds to a 900 × 2 100 mm door

Types of aluminium doors with glass

Folding doorPanels fold to the sideR16 041
Stacking doorPanels slide and stack on several tracksR17 440

All of them are glazed with 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard. A few of the largest Patio and Elite sliding door sizes are glazed with toughened safety glass instead, as their size calls for.

Hinged aluminium doors with glass: the styles

Hinged doors come in more glass styles than any other door, so the choice matters most here. Prices are for a 900 × 2 100 mm single door:

StyleGlassPrice (excl. VAT)
Large Pane glazedOne large paneR7 566
Classic glazedTwo panes either side of a mid-railR8 007
Victorian glazedGlass in a more decorative designR8 852
Classic half cladGlass above a solid lower panelR10 556
Victorian half cladGlass above a solid lower panelR11 425
Large Pane full cladNo glass, solid panelsR12 226

Fully glazed aluminium doors with glass are the most affordable hinged doors we make, because a pane of glass costs less than a clad panel. Half clad doors keep the light at eye level while protecting the lower part from knocks and giving some privacy. Read more in our guide to clad aluminium doors.

Glass options for aluminium doors

You choose the glass on each product page. The table shows the price per square metre of the door size and, in brackets, what it adds to a 900 × 2 100 mm door (1.89 m²):

GlassPrice changeBest for
6.38 mm clear laminatedIncludedMost doors: clear view, safety glass
Obscure laminated+R248 (+R468.72)Bathrooms, front doors facing the street
Colourvue Cool Tint laminated+R184 (+R347.76)A light tint and a little less glare

Double glazed 24.76 mm unit+R1 952.50 (+R3 690.22)Cold rooms and noise

Float glass is not offered on any door, because doors need safety glass. The double-glazed unit is offered on fully glazed doors, but not on the Patio sliding range or on clad and louvre designs.

Why safety glass matters in a door

People walk into doors, push them with a flat hand, and bump them with furniture. Ordinary float glass breaks into long, sharp shards; safety glass does not. SANS 10400-N, published by the SABS, requires safety glass in doors and in glass near doors and floors for that reason.

Laminated safety glass, which we use as standard, is two sheets of glass bonded to a tough interlayer. If it breaks, the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer and the pane stays in the frame, which also makes it harder to break through. Our guide to toughened vs laminated glass explains the difference.

What aluminium doors with glass cost for a typical home

Here is an example for a family home with a front door, a patio door and a back door, all in the same colour:

DoorPrice (excl. VAT)
Front: 900 × 2 100 mm Victorian glazed hinged door with obscure glassR9 320.72
Patio: 2 400 × 2 100 mm Patio sliding door, clearR5 369
Back: 900 × 2 100 mm Classic half clad hinged doorR10 556
Total excl. VATR25 245.72

VAT at 15% is added at checkout, and delivery is priced by distance, or you can collect free. Swap the patio slider for a 1 800 × 2 100 mm Large Pane double door at R12 905 if you want the full width to open.

Privacy with glass doors

  • Obscure glass blurs the view while letting light in, ideal for a front door facing the street or a bathroom door.
  • Half clad designs keep glass at eye level and a solid panel below.
  • Solarshield Silver has a reflective finish that makes it harder to see in during the day.
  • Blinds or film can be added later by your own supplier.

Choosing aluminium doors with glass for each opening

  • Front door: a hinged single or double door, often with obscure glass or a half clad design.
  • Patio, up to about 3 000 mm: a sliding door, or a hinged double door if you want the full width open.
  • Wide patio: a folding or stacking door so most of the wall opens.
  • Kitchen to yard: a stable door with a glass top half, so the top half opens for air while the bottom keeps pets in.
  • Entrance with a view: a pivot door for a wide, striking leaf.

Not sure about the direction a hinged door should open? See open in vs open out doors; every product drawing is shown from inside so the direction is clear before we make it.

Glass doors and South African weather

Our climate asks different things of a glass door depending on where it faces and where you live.

  • Strong sun. North and west-facing glass doors let in a lot of heat on summer afternoons. Solarshield laminated glass cuts glare and heat; an overhang or stoep roof helps even more.
  • Wind-driven rain. On the Highveld, summer storms push rain against exposed doors. Our StormSeal sliding doors offer a high threshold on every size, and hinged doors that open out press against their seals in the wind.
  • Cold winters. A large glass door loses heat at night. Double glazing keeps a living room noticeably warmer; heavy curtains help on single glass.
  • Coastal air. Salt air is hard on any metal finish. Rinse aluminium frames with fresh water every few weeks near the sea, and keep tracks and hinges clean.

Colours for glass doors

Aluminium doors with glass are made to order in White, Bronze, Charcoal, Black or Natural Anodised, all at the same price. Black and Charcoal frames frame the view and suit modern homes; White and Bronze blend with most traditional South African facades. Match the doors to your windows so the house reads as one design.

Measuring the opening

Measure the width of the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at both sides and in the middle, then use the smallest figures. Choose the standard size equal to or just under the opening so your installer can pack and fix the frame square and plumb. For a hinged door, check that the leaf has room to swing; for a sliding door, that the fixed panel will not block a light switch or socket. Our guide on how to measure aluminium doors shows each step.

Keeping glass doors clean and safe

  • Clean the glass with a soft cloth and a mild glass cleaner; never use a scraper on laminated glass.
  • Wash the frames with mild soapy water and keep sliding tracks and sills free of grit.
  • Fit door stops so hinged doors do not swing into walls in the wind.
  • Use stickers or a frosted band on large clear panes so nobody walks into them.

Aluminium doors with glass: frequently asked questions

How much are aluminium doors with glass?

In our shop a 2-panel Patio sliding door starts at R4 025 and a 900 × 2 100 mm Large Pane glazed hinged door at R7 566, excluding VAT.

What glass is used in aluminium doors?

6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass as standard. A few large Patio and Elite sliding door sizes use toughened safety glass.

Can I get obscure glass in an aluminium door?

Yes. Obscure laminated glass adds R248 per square metre of the door size, about R469 on a 900 × 2 100 mm door.

Can aluminium doors with glass be double glazed?

Yes, fully glazed doors except the Patio sliding range, for R1 952.50 per square metre of the door size.

Are glass doors less secure than clad doors?

Laminated glass stays in the frame if it breaks, which makes it harder to get through. For a back or service entrance, a half clad or full clad door adds privacy.

Do glass doors cost more than clad doors?

No. On our hinged doors the fully glazed designs are the most affordable; clad panels cost more than glass.

Which colour is best for a glass door?

All five colours cost the same. Black and Charcoal suit modern homes and frame the view; White and Bronze suit most traditional homes. Matching your windows usually looks best.

Do you install aluminium doors with glass?

No. Our doors are supply only and are fitted by your own builder or installer.
