Clad aluminium doors replace some or all of the glass with solid aluminium panels, giving you privacy, a solid kick zone and a door that looks the same from outside whether the lights are on or off. Coetz™ makes clad aluminium doors in two styles: half clad, with a solid lower panel and glass above, and full clad, with solid panels throughout. This guide compares them with glazed doors and covers designs, sizes, prices and where each works best.

Half clad or full clad?
Half clad
A half clad door has a solid aluminium panel at the bottom and glass at the top, often searched for as an aluminium door with half glass. You get daylight at eye level and above, and a tough lower panel that shrugs off kicks, dog scratches and trolley bumps.
Full clad
A full clad door is solid aluminium panels from top to bottom. It gives the most privacy and suits an entrance where you do not want to see in or out, such as a garage, store room or bathroom.
| Glazed | Half clad | Full clad | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daylight | Most | Top half | None |
| Privacy | Least | Partial | Full |
| Kick zone | Glass | Solid | Solid |

Clad doors and security
Full clad aluminium doors show nothing of what is inside, which removes a temptation as much as anything. Like every hinged door, it comes with a latch lock. The solid panels are aluminium, so they do not rot or swell, and the lower panel of a half clad door protects the glass from the knocks that break it most often.
Designs
- Classic: available glazed, half clad and full clad.
- Large Pane: available glazed and full clad.
- A more decorative design for older-style homes: glazed, half clad and full clad.
Stable doors also come clad, or with half glass and half cladding. See aluminium stable doors.

Where clad doors work best
Clad aluminium doors earn their place wherever privacy or wear matters:
- Front doors facing the street, where privacy matters. See aluminium front doors.
- Back doors into a scullery or laundry, where the bottom takes knocks. See aluminium back doors.
- Garage-to-house doors, where a full clad door keeps the garage out of view.
- Store rooms and outbuildings, where full clad doors keep contents hidden.
- Bathrooms and toilets off a passage, where a full clad door gives complete privacy.
Glass in half clad doors
The glazed part of a half clad door uses 6.38 mm clear laminated safety glass, which holds together if it is struck. Doors must meet SANS 10400-N, published by the South African Bureau of Standards. For privacy without cladding, position and blinds work better than obscured glass, because doors are supplied with clear glass.
Colours
Clad aluminium doors come in all five finishes: White, Bronze and Charcoal at the same price, Black about 10% more and Natural Anodised about 20% more. Because the panels are solid, the colour of clad aluminium doors makes a bigger visual statement than on a glazed door; a black or charcoal full clad door makes a striking front entrance.

Choosing clad doors
Use these steps to narrow down clad aluminium doors for your opening:
- Decide how much light you need inside the door.
- Decide how much privacy you need from outside.
- Think about wear: busy back doors benefit from a solid lower panel.
- Choose the design: Classic, Large Pane or the decorative design.
- Choose open in or out and the size. See aluminium door sizes.
