In this guide
Planning for the Overberg coastal climate
Aluminium windows and doors Hermanus buyers should plan for a mild coastal climate with wet winters, a strong summer south-easter, salt spray off Walker Bay and sand on windy days. Three practical choices follow:
- Rinse the frames. Powder-coated aluminium handles sea air well; rinse frames and tracks with fresh water often so salt and sand do not build up.
- Frame the sea view. Wide sliding doors or folding doors open a lounge to the stoep and Walker Bay.
- Keep sand out of the tracks. Vacuum sliding window and door tracks after windy days so sand does not wear the rollers.
For aluminium windows and doors Hermanus homes near the sea, closing windows fully in the south-easter protects the hinges, and laminated safety glass holds together if a pane is cracked.
