How side-hung aluminium windows work
Friction stays run along the top and bottom of the sash on the hinge side, carrying its weight and controlling the swing. Release the handle and the sash swings out like a door; friction holds it at whatever angle you leave it. Because the whole sash swings clear of the frame, the opening is unobstructed, and on most sizes you can reach the outside of the glass from inside to clean it.
Where side-hung aluminium windows are the right choice
- Living areas, where you want to move as much air as possible on a hot day.
- Sheltered walls, or walls that face away from the prevailing wind and rain.
- Rooms that need a large clear opening, subject to the escape dimensions your building plans require.

The parts that do the work
Three parts do the work, and all three can be replaced without touching the frame:
- The friction stays carry the sash and set how freely it swings.
- The handle pulls the sash closed onto its seal and holds it there. If the handle turns but the sash stays proud of the frame, the keep is out of line.
- The rubber seal is what the closed sash presses against. It stops draughts, and it is the part that wears first.
Because a hinged sash closes onto a compressed seal, side hung (casement) windows generally seal better against wind and rain than sliding windows, which rely on brush seals that only touch.
