In this guide
Planning for the Highveld climate
Aluminium windows and doors Roodepoort buyers should plan for summer afternoon thunderstorms, sometimes with hail, cold, dry winters with frosty mornings, and stronger wind on the ridges that run through the suburbs. Three practical choices follow:
- Top hung windows can stay open in light rain, so rooms stay ventilated through summer storms. See top hung aluminium windows.
- Plan for the ridges. Homes on the ridges catch more wind, so choose open-out doors on exposed walls and lock sliding doors on stormy days.
- Let the winter sun in. North-facing windows and sliding doors warm living areas on cold mornings, while a roof overhang keeps the summer sun off.
Laminated safety glass holds together if hail cracks it, and late-winter dust is easy to vacuum out of sliding tracks before it wears the rollers.
